About Us
Our Story
We are just a regular family. We raised two
beautiful girls and four grandkids and were
living the dream. Everyone was pretty
healthy; we had just downsized three years
ago, so life was good.
But on December 11, 2023, we got the call
no parent ever wants to hear... ''Mom, I'm in
trouble; the doctors are telling me I have
Leukemia. Not just Leukemia, but a special
kind called Acute Myeloid Leukemia and I
have to start Chemo right now.''
I will spare you the horrific details of multiorgan failure and all of the pain and
anguish of those 66 days, but suffice it to
say our pain cannot compare to what she
endured. Her coma for at least a part of
that time was probably a blessing.
She is not always the typical result of AML,
but it is also not a rare event either. What
was very difficult for us was that we lived
in Homer, GA, and she lived in San Antonio,
Texas.
So that meant travel... lots of it... and
hotels, and Airbnbs. Initially, it was just the
cost of Chemo. That was no problem; she
was doing great! Then there was the
change of flights, delays, etc... so a $500
flight turned into a $1,500 flight, and even
more difficult financial obligations were to
come ahead. Fortunately, we had a few
bucks in reserve, dug deep, and could be
there for our girl.
